7 Mar 2008 - Spring Term Newsletter No. 7 – 7 March 2008

Lots of news, information and things to celebrate this week so thank you for taking the time to read this rather lengthy newsletter.

High Five Team does it again! Our team beat Bodriggy 4 – 0 in our last league game of the season. We have won all our games putting us top of the league. Mrs Nowell and all of the team would like to thank Eilis’s mum for all her help and all the adults who have supported us and cheered us on. Well done to Eilis , Merryn , Carla ,Tamara , Saffie , Rosie , Henry , Billy. I would also like to thank Mrs Nowell for all her hard work and commitment to the team.

Music

Our band and dancers did us proud in the St Piran’s Parade. We have had some lovely positive comments come back to us at school, about how smart they all looked and how well behaved they were. They all did so well and we have a great picture of our band in this weeks Cornishman. Thanks must go to all the children who took part, Mr Hinchliffe and Miss Fitzgerald for organising the band, Mrs Gribben for her part in the band and Mrs Yates, Mrs Nowell and Mrs Pascoe for their work with the dancers.

Miss Fitzgerald would like you to know our new violin teacher Lucy Jennings will be in school to meet the children. We will have vacancies and violins for loan and if anyone is interested they should speak to Miss Fitzgerald. We also have a trumpet for loan and lessons are £4 a week.

She would also like the choir and musicians to bring in a folder or a bag to keep their music in. The choir are given words weekly and some children are losing them. Music bags are available from the office – price £4.

Next week Mr Hinchliffe is going to start up an Infant choir. He is going to start with any children in Year 2 who would like to sing and is also hoping to take children from Year 1  (it will depend a bit on numbers). The choir will meeting on a Thursday afternoon (during school time) for about half an hour, Mr Hinchliffe will not be auditioning, as he does for the Junior choir, he is just looking for children who are keen to sing.

P.E. kit

Just a quick reminder that the children do need to have their P.E kit in school during the week. If anyone has any P.E kit that their children have grown out of, could they please send it into school and give it to their class teachers, so we can build up a bank of spare kit for children to borrow if they have forgotten theirs. It is important to us that children join in with this lesson as with all other lessons in the curriculum.

Clubs

As the teachers have parent consultations next week ALL CLUBS WILL BE CANCELLED.

A request from the teachers

Please can the children not bring toys (particularly the little dogs toys) into school. The children have been swapping them and generally falling out over them, taking up a lot of the teachers’ time.

School Council

The school council are organising a jumble sale and a mufti day at the end of term (more details to follow next week). They want to raise money for their outdoor play area and would like to ask you for some raffle prizes.  If you do have a raffle prize you can donate, please send it up to Mr Morley in Year 6.

On the look out…

Over last weekend there was some anti social behaviour on our school premises by some older youths. The police have been informed.  They have asked parents to be vigilant and if you have any information or concerns please ring PC Millington on 08452 777222 and report it. Thank you.

Swimming

We celebrated last week in our newsletter the success in the Year3/4 swimming gala. Our children did so well and we feel sure there will be a special presentation ceremony, as there has been in other years and the winning teams’ pictures and names will be in the paper. Mrs Nowell informs me that this will not happen until after the Year5/6 gala but we will keep you informed.

It was very much a team  event, some of the children were mentioned in last week’s newsletter as they had swam in the year group above their age.  We now say a very BIG well done to the following children, who also took part, at the Year3/4swimming gala, for all their effort, determination and great swimming :  JJack JCaitlin  JChris  J Tia  JLauren  JJames  JTanya  JEllie  J Lotty T J Millie

J Henry  J Will  JCameron and J Mawgen .

A quick mention about nits again we certainly still have them in year 3 –a real effort please on this one……… please continue to check your child’s hair daily and at least weekly. Shampoo, condition and comb thoroughly.

Newlyn Children’s centre opening is tomorrow Saturday 8 March from .   Our ‘banner’ is looking fantastic, thanks to all the hard work done in school, so pop along and have a look –

there will also be some children’s work on display to see.

Headteacher certificates were given out last week in our ‘sharing assembly’ to the following children..J Maisy-Sky  J Chloe  J Jamie  – well done.

Finally some more praise for the children of Newlyn   School and the staff. On Tuesday we had one of the Cornwall advisors for Literacy and Numeracy and the Southwest Regional Advisor (who flew down from Bristol ) visiting our school. They met with staff and then had a tour of the school with some of our school councillors. Afterwards they met with a group of Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 children to talk about their work before meeting back with me. They said our children were ‘polite, articulate, very knowledgeable about their school, keen to share and great ambassadors for Newlyn school. They enjoyed looking round the school and commented on how calm it was and how everybody was working purposefully, they also thought the displays in the corridors were very good and were impressed by the recent work we have been doing particularly in writing.
